[I've been thinking of stuffing some putty down there to make a plug and then measure it. Put some saran wrap at the bottom to keep the putty out of the phase plug. That would not sound nice![/QUOTE]

Panomaniac, this technique could be adapted to produce a wax plug of the 511E throat. This could be done with the driver mounted to the horn if saran wrap is used between the two items. A dry run on just the horn would be prudent.

I do not know if the 511E has a rib near the throat. If so, this method becomes more complex but still do-able.

Wax, of course! I may have a try with the stuff I have.
The tough part will be the drivers. Have bug screens and such to contend with.
Need to find a release compound, too, so that the plug will come out.

The candlemaking link states cooking oil is a suitable release agent. Washes off with hot water and detergent. Use a 'drift'(eg, a piece of suitably sized dowel) at the small end of the horn to gently tap out the plug. Carefully apply heat to the horn metal surrounding the plug to aid in the removal of a reluctant plug.

The horn would not worry me much. It's the driver that worries me!

Why does the driver need to be part of the process of producing a plug from the horn throat end?

It doesn't. I'm just interested to know the actual expansion of the driver throat in case I ever want to make my own horns or adapters.
